Legal Experience

John Horan has over 20 years of litigation, internal investigation and transactional experience as an attorney in Silicon Valley, New York City and overseas, including several years practicing law with a Saudi law firm in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His clients have included Wall Street commercial and investment banks, Silicon Valley software and hardware companies, and other financial, technology and commercial enterprises from the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

As a litigator, John has worked on disputes and investigations involving federal securities law, corporate governance, intellectual property and complex commercial matters. In addition, he has led the eDiscovery effort on a wide range of engagements, from options-backdating investigations to securities, patent and other intellectual property disputes, including issues involving the intersection of ESI and privacy rights and obligations.

Software Design & Development Experience

A long-time proponent of the use of digital technology in the practice of law, in 1999 John founded a software startup and designed and developed a Web-based legal analysis application, gaining technical knowledge and experience he now applies to his eDiscovery/ePrivacy counseling and software development projects.

In addition to his work as an eDiscovery and ePrivacy counsel, John has created the ESI Ninja blog, where he posts about recent developments in eDiscovery, ePrivacy and ESI. John also devotes substantial time to research and development work on software and other technology projects involving the use of ESI in litigation and internal investigations, including the structure and analysis of ESI, knowledge modeling (especially hierarchical structures), and information retrieval.

John's software development work has focused on Web-based applications for Microsoft's ASP.NET platform, using C#, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, SQL Server and XML/XSLT. In addition, as an avid Udacity participant John is developing several projects with Python (and the Django and Bottle IDEs). One of his current development projects is the ESI Ninja KB, a Web-based knowledgebase ("KB") designed to organize, store and retrieve eDiscovery, ePrivacy and related research (key cases, briefs, stipulations, articles and other resources). Two demo versions of the ESI Ninja KB are available: the eDiscovery KB and the ePrivacy KB.
